In conjunction with zoological specialist Ursa International, Centripetal Works provided conceptual design services for the non-profit For the Love of Primates for their new 59-acre campus located in Perry County, Ohio. The organization is dedicated to the creation of a sanctuary for small primates including those being retired from biomedical research following the COVID-19 pandemic. The conceptual Master Plan developed by the team includes two phases of construction, the first of which includes an Administration Building, Commissary, Maintenance and Workshop Building, Veterinary Clinic, and the first of two Habitat and Care Quarters buildings.
For the Love of Primates’ Administration Building is a 4,410 square foot building that includes the organization’s operational offices as well as a flexible space for community outreach and education that can be configured for groups of kindergarten and elementary age children as well as students middle school aged and older. The design is intended to project the more modest exterior appearance of a barn clad in insulated metal panels to fit in within the context of the Middle Ohio countryside. However, on the inside, the building attempts to provide clean, functional, modern Class A-quality office space and a classroom facility on par with higher education institutions. Sustainability features included in the conceptual design include a rainwater harvesting system to supply the pedigreed landscaping around the building and the campus entrance as well as photovoltaic panels and battery systems to offset its electricity consumption and provide backup generation capacity.
